Memphis Motor Sports

Memphis Motor Sports is a car racing park situated across Loosahatchie River from Memphis. It opened in 1987 with a road course (1.8-mile) and a drag strip. A tri-oval short track (3/4-mile) was constructed in 1998. It once hosted an ASA Late Model Series competition, as well as, NASCAR Nationwide Series and Camping World Truck Series. Events like the Super Chevy Show, Professional Drag Racers Association, Mega Mopar Action Series and Fun Ford Series, were also hosted in the 4,400-foot drag strip.

Ed Gatlin established the Memphis Motor Sports in 1986, together with a group of investors. They purchased a 400-acre land in northeast Shelby County, Tennessee and constructed a drag strip with an adjacent go-kart track, road course and dirt track. The Grand Prix Association of Long Beach purchased the whole facility in 1996. In 1997, a 3/4-mile tri-oval was built on the location of the old dirt track. A new dirt track was constructed on the location of the old go-kart track. The tri-oval opened on the 5th of June 1998.

Dover Motorsports, Inc. acquired Memphis Motor Sports the following month. Lack of finances caused the facility to close on the 30th of October 2009. Dover Motorsports declared that it’s terminating all operations at the park, and that it wouldn’t be endorsing any events in Memphis, in 2010. The facility was under a sale agreement to Gulf Coast Entertainment, but the latter failed to produce the funds. The facility was auctioned off by Dover Motorsports on the 14th of December2010 to Palm Beach International Raceway for an amount of $1.9 million.

The deal between Dover Motorsports and Palm Beach International was finalized and Memphis Motor Sports re-opened in April 2011. It was renamed, ‘Memphis International Raceway’, and a new logo was also made to reflect the change.
